Going for a walk is a simple yet powerful way to get to know your neighborhood and better understand its assets and challenges. But what’s even better than going for a walk on your own? Going for a walk with your neighbors.

This tour stop features Jacob Unterreiner, leader of the Strong Towns Local Conversation group Charlotte Urbanists, joined by Strong Towns Community Builder John Pattison. Jacob walks you through his group’s process for doing monthly neighborhood walks (also called “Jane’s Walks” after Jane Jacobs), how they organize these outings, and how they use the event to reflect on important issues facing their city and its built environment.

The course is worth 1 continuing education credit through the AICP.

"My favorite session so far! Thanks."

"This was an awesome session! there are so few people who walk or bike on a regular basis in my community, it's been difficult to encourage people to take recreational walks WITHIN our neighborhoods"

"I really appreciated hearing from Jacob about his experience setting up neighbourhood walks. He had so many great ideas about topics and how to structure them."

This session is part of our 2023 Local-Motive Tour, which features 10 action-oriented, short-form classes on subjects ranging from strengthening local businesses to creating better public engagement processes.
